When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. The retention phase lasts for several years. Your final orthodontic result depends on you and your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far.

You may receive a removable upper or lower retainer called a Hawley retainer.  This retainer should be worn full time for approximately 6 months and then should be worn at bed time for an extended time period.  Remember to remove your retainer before eating and brushing, and brush your retainer before placing it back in your mouth.  Always place your retainer in the provided case and never wrap it up in a napkin or tissue so you don't throw it away.  Have fun designing your retainer to make is match you personality.  There are many more options to choose from at the office.

You may also be given a permanent retainer that is adhered to the back side of either your upper or lower teeth.  This retainer is often worn for a number of years.  Care must be taken to brush and floss around this retainer.  You must also be careful of certain sticky or crunchy foods to prevent the glue spots from coming loose.  If you ever feel the retainer break loose call the office right away to have it repaired.
